UMass Medical School pharmacists will discuss proposed regulations for managed care and display posters on a cardiovascular drug and a pediatric behavioral health medication safety initiative at the American Drug Utilization Review Society conference Feb. 25-27 at the DoubleTree Paradise Valley Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Paul L. Jeffrey, PharmD, a pharmacy director in UMass Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine division, will discuss the historical relationship between state Medicaid pharmacy programs and their managed Medicaid partners, significant challenges faced by Medicaid pharmacy programs, and the effect of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ proposed Medicaid managed care regulation on the relationship of the affected entities. A pharmacy director in the Office of Clinical Affairs within the Center for Health Policy and Research, Jeffrey also serves as director of pharmacy for the Massachusetts Medicaid program, MassHealth. Jeffrey also is a clinical associate professor of UMass Medical School’s Family Medicine and Community Health. He will speak from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Feb. 26.

Use of Clinical Evidence and Business Analytic Tools to Forecast Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin Kexin 9 (PCSK9) Inhibitor Utilization in a State Medicaid Program
The poster will demonstrate how the evaluation of clinical evidence can be used to predict candidates for the treatment of cardiovascular disease with the PCSK9 inhibitor, describe the effect on a health plan through the use of claims data, and project the cost to the plan.

Preliminary Outcomes, Challenges, and Successes of a Pediatric Behavioral Health Medication Safety Initiative in a State Medicaid Program
The poster will describe the successful implementation of the Pediatric Behavioral Health Medication Safety Initiative, which focuses on the safe and effective use of behavioral medication in MassHealth members under age 18. The pharmacists concluded that outreach, interdisciplinary teamwork and care coordination are needed for successful interventions for pediatric MassHealth members who are prescribed behavioral health medication regimens.
