Executive Vice Chancellor Joyce Murphy is co-chair of Massachusetts Health Council Annual Award Gala

Joyce A. Murphy, MPA, executive vice chancellor of UMass Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine division, is co-chair of the Massachusetts Health Council’s Annual Award Gala Nov. 3 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel in Boston.

The Massachusetts Health Council is a nonprofit dedicated to improving and protecting the health of Massachusetts residents. Lora M. Pellegrini, president and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, also is co-chair of the event.

“I am honored to serve as co-chair for the Massachusetts Health Council’s annual awards dinner,” Murphy said. “As we work to improve access to high-quality health care and reduce health disparities, it’s crucial that we support organizations like the Massachusetts Health Council, whose mission is to promote prevention and wellness for all of Massachusetts’ residents.”

Murphy received the Outstanding Leadership award from the Massachusetts Health Council at its 2015 annual awards ceremony on Oct. 21 at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. She was honored for her determination to increase health care for the underserved and high-risk populations.

Murphy assumed the senior-most executive role at Commonwealth Medicine in 2011, five years after joining UMass Medical School and holding the position of Commonwealth Medicine’s vice chancellor and chief operating officer. Previously, she held the positions of president and chief executive officer of Carney Hospital in Dorchester; founding president of St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children; vice president of St. Margaret’s Hospital for Women; first deputy commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue; and superintendent of MCI Framingham, the only women’s prison in Massachusetts.

Murphy serves on numerous boards and commissions, including the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission Advisory Council and Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg’s Advisory Committee on Wage Equality. She is vice chair of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Board of Directors. Murphy also sits on the boards of Curry College and UHealthSolutions; as well as on the Leadership Council of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare.
