Joyce A. Murphy, MPA, executive vice chancellor of UMass Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine division, has been appointed to serve on the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare Board of Directors.
The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare is a national nonprofit leading the movement to bring compassion to every patient-caregiver interaction.
“Joyce brings a wealth of healthcare, leadership and operations experience from her varied and successful career, making her an excellent addition to our board,” said Julie Rosen, executive director of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare.
“Joyce previously served on our Leadership Council, providing invaluable strategic guidance to the Schwartz Center,” Rosen said. “We’re pleased she will be joining us in this new role, as her vision and expertise are important as we continue to advance compassionate healthcare as a national priority.”
“The Schwartz Center is critical to improving the current health care delivery system, which must work to construct a better framework to support enhanced compassion in the delivery of care,” Murphy said. “Patients want to be treated like a whole person, not a diseased body part. I’m honored to work alongside my other board members to further the Schwartz Center’s mission.”
Murphy assumed the senior-most executive role at Commonwealth Medicine in 2011, five years after joining UMass Medical School and holding the position of Commonwealth Medicine’s vice chancellor and chief operating officer. Previously, she held the positions of president and chief executive officer of Carney Hospital in Dorchester; founding president of St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children; vice president of St. Margaret’s Hospital for Women; first deputy commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue; and superintendent of Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Framingham, the only women’s prison in Massachusetts.
She serves on numerous boards and commissions, including the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission Advisory Council and Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg’s Advisory Committee on Wage Equality. She is vice chair of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Board of Directors. Murphy also sits on the boards of Curry College and UHealthSolutions.
