Meridian Bancorp, Inc. and East Boston Savings Bank appoint Joyce A. Murphy to Board of Directors

UMass Medical School’s Joyce A. Murphy, MPA, executive vice chancellor of the Commonwealth Medicine division, has joined the Board of Directors at both Meridian Bancorp, Inc. and East Boston Savings Bank.

Richard J. Gavegnano, president, CEO and chairman of Meridian Bancorp, Inc. and East Boston Savings Bank just announced her appointment.

“Ms. Murphy’s business background and extensive knowledge of the Boston communities and organizations will be a valuable asset to the bank,” said Gavegnano. “Her intimate knowledge and understanding of the bank’s market area make Joyce a perfect fit for East Boston Savings Bank.”

Murphy’s appointment is the latest in a string of honors and accolades she has earned during her distinguished career. Last year, she was elected chair of the Board of Directors of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for several entities, including the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, Curry College and UHealthSolutions. Murphy is also a member of the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission Advisory Council.

In 2017, Murphy was the recipient of UMass Medical School’s Trailblazing Women Award, which recognizes women who actively support aspiring women leaders at the medical school. In 2015, Murphy was chosen by the Worcester Business Journal as one of six Outstanding Women in Business, and also received the Excellence in Health Care, Arts & Education Pinnacle Award from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

Murphy has made countless contributions to UMass Medical School during her 12-year tenure. As executive vice chancellor, she is relied on for her thoughtful leadership of all Commonwealth Medicine centers, programs and departments, and plays an integral role in creating and implementing the overall strategy for the enterprise. She previously held the position of vice chancellor and chief operating officer, managing administrative functions and daily operations for Commonwealth Medicine’s clinical and service-delivery programs.

Murphy holds a master of public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, an honorary doctorate of public administration from Curry College and a bachelor’s degree from UMass Boston.
