UMass Medical School’s nationally recognized thought leader on transitioning to a single-payer health care system is a featured speaker at the Boston Bar Association’s “Single Payer Health Care: Why? How & When?” event May 14. Katharine London, MS, principal, Health Law & Policy, will delve into the positives and potential pitfalls of adopting a single-payer model in the US.
The long simmering single-payer debate has reignited in the tumultuous health care policy landscape. With escalating health care costs and growing frustration with preexisting conditions, legislators are facing intense pressure from constituents, organizations and some of their peers to challenge the status quo.
The single-payer system has long been a focal point for London. After the Vermont legislature voted to approve development of a single-payer system in 2011, she led the team that constructed its health care financing plan. London has also evaluated the variation in prices paid by commercial health insurance carriers to Vermont health care providers.
London has more than 20 years of experience directing numerous, intricate projects for government agencies, analyzing health care quality and cost data for a variety of insurers and providers, developing payment strategies, collecting and compiling complex data, and presenting results in a layperson format. She holds an MS in health policy and management from the Harvard School of Public Health and a BA in applied mathematics with biology from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges.
