Clinical pharmacists from UMass Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine will present strategies for leveraging naloxone as a means to controlling opioid abuse at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy Annual Meeting 2019 March 25-28 in San Diego.
When prescribing opioids, finding the balance between prescribing enough to be effective without creating a risk for abuse, is a common responsibility prescribers struggle with across the nation. Bonnie Greenwood, PharmD, BCPS, clinical program director in Clinical Pharmacy Services, and Kimberly Lenz, PharmD, clinical pharmacy manager in the Office of Clinical Affairs, will discuss how to strike that balance when they deliver their presentation 2:30-3:45 pm on March 26 in room 6B.
Attendees will receive a comprehensive overview of tested managed care strategies prescribers are using to judiciously treat patients in need of powerful painkillers, with special consideration for the role naloxone can play in this process.
Greenwood is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and a member of four professional pharmacy organizations. Her team at Commonwealth Medicine has become a sought-after partner for organizations seeking results-oriented solutions to containing pharmacy costs and improving patient outcomes. At last year’s AMCP Annual Meeting, Greenwood moderated a discussion on budgeting for the future of the gene therapy and co-authored an award-winning presentation on the financial impact of high-cost infused medications across three sites of care.
As part of her Commonwealth Medicine role, Lenz serves as a pharmacy leader for MassHealth, the Massachusetts Medicaid program. She is responsible for the development and oversight of MassHealth clinical initiatives that address the management of Hepatitis C, pediatric behavioral health, opioids, and substance use disorder. In 2017 she was awarded the Cardinal Health Generation Rx Champions Award for her efforts to combat prescription drug abuse.
